To keep the heart unwrinkled, be hopeful, kindly, cheerful, reverent, that is to triumph over old age - William Hazlitt

"She is an inspiration and is always happy," said Trudi Hurst of her mother, Lucile Hurst, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Sept. 30.

Lucile was born in Denver but grew up in Chicago.

"When I was 16 we got our first car, it was the first Chevy and my dad and I had to take driving lessons together to learn how to drive it, when we got our first T.V. there were only two channels back then," Lucile recalled.

During World War II she helped the cause by working in an airplane factory in a place that is now the O'Hare Airport.

Later Lucile moved to Aspen Colorado where she lived for 40 years. During that time one of the things she did was work in a Ski Shop and was also a ski instructor.

Lucile who is an amazing witty, and full of life little lady has lived a very active and exciting life.

"I started traveling a lot in the 1970's and have been around the world twice. The country I liked best was India, it is a very fascinating country," said Lucile.

Maybe keeping so active is what has kept Lucile in such good health all these years even now other than having some trouble with her hearing and eye sight she is in great health.

"I attribute my long life to my joy in living! I played tennis until I was 83, and I now walk as much as I can to stay active," Lucile said.

"I also eat like a horse. I love pasta and chocolates," she said grinning.

Even at the age of 100 Lucile doesn't let much stop her, and she is still an active member of the Alta Vista Garden Club in Prescott, where she lived for 18 years before moving to Chino Valley 13 years ago to live with her daughter.

"I enjoy the garden club because I love flowers and nature, I just love beauty," said Lucile.

One of Lucile's wishes for her 100th birthday was a fast ride in her friends Mercedes. So her friend granted her wish and took her for a ride in his Mercedes at 100 miles per hour.

"I told him you better not get pulled over by the police because you are going to have a hard time explaining what you are doing giving this 100 year old lady a 100 mile per hour ride," Lucile smiled.
