The Chino Valley Model Aviators worked with two classes of 2nd-3rd-graders from Mingus Springs Charter School Aug. 19 at the Chino Valley Library. | Elks provide bingo games for veterans at Prescott VA hospital |
The Chino Valley Elks Lodge #2842 play bingo at the Bob Stump Veterans Affairs hospital in Prescott recently with hospitalized veterans. The Elks visit the hospital quarterly to visit with the patients and play bingo. Seventeen veterans attended the July visit and won $1 chips good at The Canteen store on the VA campus for each game played. The Canteen sells clothing, comfort items, shoes and food. Proposition 13, proposed legislation geared to lower personal property tax, did not make the November ballot, according to Marty Corbett, the Chino Valley resident who volunteered to collect signatures in this area.
"We were close in collecting signatures for the initiative state wide, but did not make the requirement of 225,000," Corbett said. "I want to thank all the businesses and volunteers who helped me in this campaign in Chino Valley, Paulden, Ash Fork and Seligman. We all worked very had collecting signatures." Author Josh Wagner of Missoula, Mont., read from his latest novel, "Deadwind Sea," inspired by time he spent in Chino Valley, Sunday in Prescott.
"I moved to the hills west of Chino Valley in the fall of 2007 and lived with my dog in my truck pop-up camper through the winter of 2008," he said. He parked on the property of friends who provided him with the space, water and frequent home-cooked meals. Wagner intended to write while he was in Arizona - but not the novel he produced, he said. About 100 athletes from across Arizona, youth and adults, competed in the 4th Annual Summer Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon Sunday, starting at the Chino Valley Aquatic Center.
