Tears at a chamber of commerce luncheon? A few eyes were suspiciously wet at the Chino Valley Area Chamber of Commerce annual meeting and luncheon on June 12, as three six-year board members stepped down and welcomed their successors.

Outgoing board chair Tom Payne said the emotions surfaced because of how closely board members worked together to accomplish chamber business and several large annual events through the years.

"We've become family," he said, "I can't say enough about the work they've done."

Board members Larry Anderson, Kay Jones and Leonda Armstrong leave the board but not the chamber, and three new members will now go to work: Mary Jo Magaw, Karrie Blum and Nancy Best.

In the same month as she joins the chamber board, Magaw accepted June Business of the Month honors for Arizona State Credit Union, where she is branch manager in Chino Valley.

"This is a great place to be," she said. "I'm happy to be here and help the community."

Payne received a plaque of appreciation from the chamber board and a beer mug from current board members Darryl Croft and Rick Nichols.

Robin Christie took the podium for the first time as board chair, and outgoing board member Armstrong said, "I can't wait to sit in the audience and watch Robin do a fantastic job next year."
