Susie Burgin, owner of Earthworks Garden Center and Landscape Supply, shows the large selection of colorful Talavera pottery, made and fired in Mexico, that she carries at her Chino Valley business. Burgin says many of her customers have a Talavera collection at their homes and check all new shipments that arrive.

Susie Burgin, owner of Earthworks Garden Center and Landscape Supplies, speaks in garden terms even when describing the business side of things.
"We opened 17 years ago and built it from the ground up," Burgin said of starting the business with her husband, Red, who passed away in May 2011. After a break to care for Red during his illness, Susie returned to running the business.
She will have a booth and drawings for flowers and discount coupons at the 36th Annual Home & Garden Show at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley on April 25, 26 and 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The center is on Glassford Hill Road at Florentine Road.
Earthworks is known for its decorative rock for landscaping, but it also offers a full garden center with many varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers, planting, weed control and irrigation supplies, as well as yard decorations, such as metal art, fountains, mail boxes, and Talavera pottery, which is made and fired in Mexico.
The business is flourishing, although it has a slow season in the winter. That's when Burgin gets busy painting pallets and rocks for garden décor.
The Garden Center is an oasis, of sorts, with a forest of pine trees, fountain and art displays, floral displays and greenhouse loaded with beautiful trees, shrubs and more.
"We're more than dirt and rocks," Burgin said.
She says people often don't know about the Garden Center because from the highway, they can see only the big semi trucks used to haul rock and sections of colored rock. The Garden Center is at the back of the business, and she encourages people to come check it out.
Earthworks serves the quad-city area at 2531 N. Highway 89 in Chino Valley. Phone is 636-3972 and hours are Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
