Shoes will help needy through Soles4Souls
Shoes that still have plenty of wear left in them can be put to good use. The Soles4Souls shoe drive is an international non-profit that distributes shoes to needy people around the world, especially those victimized by some sort of disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina or the earthquake in Haiti.

Amid a near-capacity crowd, bug-eating children and free worm-covered jungle cakes, Cody Lundin, a former Chino Valley resident, answered curious questions Aug. 20 about his "Dual Survival" TV show on the Discovery Channel.

Former Chino resident earns Army's 'Bulldog Warrior of the Week'
U.S. Army Private First Class Nick Seaman was promoted to Specialist after earning the Bulldog Warrior of the Week award for the following action in northern Afghanistan, where he currently is serving with the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne in the Air Assault Division.

Good ol' days in Chino-
For those who don't know, in 1854 Chino Valley received its name from U.S. Army Cavalry Lt. Amiel W. Whipple. From January through May of 1864 Chino Valley was the site of the first capital of the Arizona Territory, established at Del Rio Springs north of Chino Valley.

Aviation - How it works
The Chino Valley Model Aviators worked with two classes of 2nd-3rd-graders from Mingus Springs Charter School Aug. 19 at the Chino Valley Library.  After building the foam gliders using a penny for nose weight, from right, David Fountain, Ravay Tang, Danielle Bower, Shyla Mosley and Chase Bertram, the students took them outside to Memory Park next door to fly them, such as Cissy Gillo, far left.  Each class also got to use a computer program flight simulator.

Viewpoint: Can't thank country's leaders for loss of rights
Regarding the "Buy a ticket" editorial in the Aug. 4 Review: The analogy is simple, you say -- America is like a sports event. The citizen is the ticketholder; the illegal immigrant the gate-crasher who has stolen his assigned seat. Since seating is finite, no one sits until someone else is displaced. Simple, you say.

The graphite pencil was invented in 1564 in Borrowdale, Cumbria, England. We know this today because someone wrote it down... probably with a pencil. Apparently, someone discovered a vein of graphite under a stump being removed.

Elks provide bingo games for veterans at Prescott VA hospital
The Chino Valley Elks Lodge #2842 play bingo at the Bob Stump Veterans Affairs hospital in Prescott recently with hospitalized veterans. The Elks visit the hospital quarterly to visit with the patients and play bingo.  Seventeen veterans attended the July visit and won $1 chips good at The Canteen store on the VA campus for each game played. The Canteen sells clothing, comfort items, shoes and food.

A most dynamic gift
Almost a decade ago, my wife bought me a gift. It is something I literally use every day. Occasionally she will ask me if I wish she had purchased the bigger, flashier model. Whole heartedly, I answer, "No." My device is just fine. It is a small, red-handled pocket knife known throughout the world as a Swiss Army Knife. Mine has a modest 10 functions including tweezers and toothpick.
