Here's a trend that may not bode well for the future of our country: According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 40 percent of 16- to 19-year-olds have summer jobs - down from 75 percent of teens a generation ago.

Midwest neighborhoods of the 1950s frequently placed heavy demands on its youngest residents. Accompanied by a mental crescendo of blaring trumpets, I entered my "Roman Phase."I don't recall how it happened, but somehow I came across the magical name, "Gluteus Maximus."

Today is Memorial Day, and with yet another fire raging within sight of my hometown I feel the need to remember not just my fellow veterans who did not make it home, but also those who have served our country and communities much closer to home. Their service and sacrifice is every bit as important as the men and women whom I have served with in the military.
