"Champions keep their hands up" is the 2010 Girls Soccer Team motto this year. Kathleen Finlayson steps into the head coach position for Chino Valley High School (CVHS) girl's soccer team that opened up when Coach Bob Earle left after last season.

Softball tournament this weekend
A men's and co-ed softball tournament is seeking teams for the Chino Valley Youth Football Association Softball Tournament at the Chino Valley Community Center Park July 24-25.

The tournament is a fundraiser for the youth football season.

On to nationals in steer wrestling for Chino cowboy
Chino Valley resident Montana Hand will compete in the 62nd Annual National High School Finals Rodeo July 18-24 in Gillette, Wyo.

Hand qualified to compete in steer wrestling at the rodeo, which features more than 1,500 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia, and boasts more than $200,00 in prizes and $350,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named the National High School Rodeo National Champion.

Little League tourney now through July 14
The District 10 Little League All Star Tournament will start on July 6-14 in Chino Valley at the Community Center Ball Fields. This is the age group that goes to the World Series in Williamsport, Pa. Opening ceremonies will start at 4 p.m. the first games start at 5 p.m. Who ever wins this tournament will go to the State Tournament in Prescott, which starts July 19. The towns included are Bagdad, Camp Verde, Chino Valley, Dewey-Humboldt, Prescott North, Prescott South, Prescott Valley, Sedona, Verde Valley, Wickenburg, Williams.

Youth football, cheer July 9-10 at Walgreens
Registration for the upcoming season of Chino Valley Youth Football and Cheer will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on July 9 & 10, at the Chino Valley Walgreens.

The cost is $110 per football player ($100 for each additional football player) and $85 for each cheerleader ($75 if signing up a football player).

The club is offered through the Chino Area Partnership for special needs kids and the Chino Valley Childrens Library, and other partners.

Equistar horse show series continues this Saturday at Chino's Freeman Farms
The next Equistar Horse Show Series is on June 26, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. at Freeman Farms in Chino Valley.

Freeman Farms is at 1096 E. Road 3 South, at Road 1 East. The shows are free to watch. Spectators can sit in a small set of bleachers that the farm provides at the arena, or they can bring their own folding chairs.

Trey Osborn, who will be a junior at Chino Valley High School next school year, competes in the curl Saturday in the 100% Raw American Challenge at Mile High Middle School gym in Prescott, against lifters from across the state. He successfully lifted 30 pounds. He also competed in the bench press and dead lift in the amateur competition.

All area girls can participate in LPGA-USGA Girls Golf class
Prescott Valley has been selected as a site for LPGA-USGA Girls Golf and offer a class each Wednesday at 5 p.m. from June 2 to Aug. 11. , a nationwide developmental golf program that encourages girls ages 7-17 to learn to play golf, build friendships and sample competition in a supportive and positive learning environment.

Earle takes 2nd in State 100-m hurdles; golf team ends 8th
Chino Valley High School (CVHS) Track & Field Team had nine runners qualify for 3A State Track & Field Championships on May 14-15 at Arizona State University. Kate Earle wrapped up her successful four-year run at CVHS by placing second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.08.

OK, let's get the formalities out of the way. Chino Valley High School (CVHS) secured its place in history this past Saturday by capturing the school's first-ever 3-A State baseball championship by defeating the Empire Ravens 8-2 at the Surprise Baseball Complex, just 24 hours after defeating number-one seed Winslow on the same turf 4-1.

Strikers take Prescott soccer tourney

The U12 Chino Valley Strikers youth soccer team won the Mile High Invitational in Prescott on April 17-18, which gave them a season of 13-2-2. At the invitational, the team beat Dobson 3-2, Chandler 6-2, Las Vegas 7-0 and Glendale 6-0. This past weekend they played in the Yavapai Cup Invitational in Prescott Valley. The boys are ages 10-12, and are front row from left, Hunter Del Rio, Bridgen Bryce, Arturo Gomez, Kendall Foster, Tyran Payne and Sam Thibodeau; and back row from left, Coach Allen Foster, Logan DeHamer, Hunter O'Brien, Zac Nye, Jeremy Rios-Jakeway, Spencer Coffin, Coach Ray Del Rio and Oscar Montes. Runners and walkers can enter the 2nd Annual SpringFest 5K Run and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk at this year's SpringFest community event on May 22. The race begins at 8 a.m., starting from the Chino Valley Aquatic Center at Road 1 East and Perkinsville Road. The Town of Chino Valley is sponsoring SpringFest, a community-wide event.
