10/21/2009 7:11:00 AM Two CVHS seniors win National Merit honors
Chino Valley High School seniors Taylor Markey and Brittany Lamb are Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program.
CVHS Principal Grant Turley said the two CVHS seniors are among 34,000 Commended Students in the nation.
Being a Commended Student means the two CVHS seniors placed among the top 5 percent of the 1.5 million students who participated in the 2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last spring.
However, although being amongst the top 5 percent is an honor, Markey and Lamb's scores were just short of allowing them to continue in the 2010 competition for National Merit Scholarships. Two additional correct answers each would've made the difference.
"Recognition of high-achieving students is essential to advancing educational excellence in our nation," a NMS spokesman said. "As demonstrated by their outstanding performance in our highly competitive program, the young men and women named 'Commended Students' represent some of the most academically talented students in our country."
