A Chino Valley man died early Saturday morning in a rollover accident on Highway 89 at Outer Loop Rd.

Chino Valley Police spokesman Vincent Schaan said early investigation indicates that Christopher Maldonado, 20, was driving a 2001 Dodge Dakota pickup north on Highway 89 approaching the roundabout at a high rate of speed. His vehicle struck a curb and became airborne before landing and traveling through the center of the roundabout. The vehicle then rolled over at least once, ejecting Maldonado, who Schaan said was not wearing a seat belt.

Chino Valley firefighters and Life Line Ambulance provided medical care until Maldonado was transported by helicopter to a Phoenix area Hospital. He died at the hospital due to the severity of his injuries, Schaan said.

The crash is still under investigation, and Schaan said police will wait for autopsy results from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
