DetailsNATIONAL TRAIN DAY 2013 - WILLIAMS, AZ Anybody who is fascinated by trains is invited to come to Grand Canyon Railway depot in Williams on May 11th to celebrate National Train Day 2013. There will be a full day of train related activities for the family as well as the train buff. The event will run from 10am to 4pm. Visitors can take a trip aboard the Cataract Creek Rambler in a first class passenger car pulled by one of GCR’s historic Alco diesels. The 45 minute trip will run hourly during the day from 10am till 4pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children and may be purchased at the depot. In addition, for a $5 donation, folks will be able to have a conducted tour of the Grand Canyon Railway’s locomotive and car shop facilities (please note shop visitors must be wearing sturdy foot ware and no open toe shoes). National Train Day was initiated by Amtrak to celebrate the anniversary of the historic Golden Spike ceremony where railroads from the east and west finally touched, initiating the great settlement of Western United States. A special feature this year will be a brief reenactment of the Golden Spike Ceremony at the depot with two Grand Canyon Railway steam locomotives nose to nose. Activities at the depot include operating model railroads and a display of real railroad locomotives and cars including a Santa Fe caboose and a modern BNSF diesel locomotive. The Harvey Girls Association of Winslow will be on hand for presentations of their history, the Santa Fe Railroad and displays of Harvey House china and dining artifacts. In addition there will be an antique tractor and classic car show, an exhibit by Operation Lifesaver with a locomotive simulator, historic railroad artifacts from the Arizona State Railroad Museum and a railroad photo exhibit. Other than the Grand Canyon Railway train rides, all other activities are either free or by a donation. Food is available at the railroad and visitors are also welcome to wander one block into downtown Williams and visit the many shops featuring Route 66 memorabilia as well as art and other craft goods.   To get to the event, take I-40 west from Flagstaff to Williams exit #163 and go south on Grand Canyon Boulevard to the center of town. The Depot is just before the railroad tracks. There will be ample free parking. Sponsoring this weekend are: Grand Canyon Railway, the Grand Canyon Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society and the Williams - Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce Information on the event can also be found on the GCR’s website at: http://www.thetrain.com/special-events/national-train-day/ Contact Peter Atonna 928-636-4228 email: mjatonna@gmail.com
